Delete your account or your recordings

Last updated: 7 September 2026

You don't need the app installed to get here, and you don't need it to make a request. This page can be read and used from a browser, on any phone or computer.

There are two different situations, and they lead to two different outcomes. Find yours.

Situation 1

I have a WhisperTree account and I want to close it

You created the account, you made the recordings, and now you want to leave. We close the account and delete your data and your recordings.

How to do it

Situation 2

Someone recorded my voice and I want it gone

You don't have an account, and perhaps you've never opened the app: it was your son or your granddaughter who recorded what you were telling them. You have the right to ask for that recording to disappear, and it doesn't depend on the permission of whoever made it.

How to ask

Situation 1 — Closing your account

How to do it

From the website: sign in to your account with your app credentials and use the "Request deletion" button. It's the most direct route, because signing in already proves it's you.

By email, if you prefer: write to whispertree@mail.com from the address you registered with and tell us you want the account deleted. We reply with a confirmation before going ahead, because this can't be undone.

Before you go, take your memories with you. In the app, on the "My recordings" screen, the Export archive (.zip) button saves everything into a single file. They're yours, and they stay yours after the account is gone.

We won't ask why you're leaving, we won't offer you a discount to stay, and we won't make you fill in a form with ten questions.

What goes and what stays

Deleted

  • Your account and sign-in credentials
  • Name, email address, profile photo
  • Every recording you made that is still yours
  • The photos and content you uploaded
  • Usage data and technical logs linked to you

Stays

  • The memories you already shared stay with the people who received them
  • Accounting and tax records, which the law requires us to keep for ten years
  • Copies in backups, until they are overwritten (within 90 days)

Why shared memories stay. When you send your mother's voice to your brother, that memory is no longer only yours: it is his too. Closing your account doesn't authorise us to take it away from him. If a specific recording must not exist anywhere any more, tell us which one — and it is the person recorded who can ask for that. See Situation 2.

Changing your mind

You have 14 days from the confirmation to write to us and stop everything. After that, deletion runs and there's no going back: we don't keep a hidden archive to restore things from.

Situation 2 — I am the person who was recorded

If the voice in the recording is yours, that recording is about you, and European law gives you the right to ask for it to be erased (Art. 17 GDPR). That right is yours alone. Whoever made the recording doesn't have to agree, you don't need an account, you don't need to install anything, and you don't owe us a reason.

How to ask

Write to whispertree@mail.com telling us:

Before deleting, we ask for a minimal identity check. It exists to stop someone else from making your memories disappear in your place. We ask for the least we can, and we don't keep the documents you show us.

In this case the recording really does disappear from everywhere. We remove it from every part of WhisperTree it sits in: from the collection of the person who made it, and also from the copies other people received. That's the difference from Situation 1: someone closing their own account can't take back what they gave away, but someone who was recorded can always take back their own voice.

If the recording involves a child

Whoever holds parental responsibility can make this request on the child's behalf, with the same process and the same outcome: the recording is removed everywhere.

If the person recorded has died

If a relative asks us to delete the recordings of someone who has passed away, write to us anyway. It isn't an automatic case and we treat it with care: we consider together the wishes the person expressed while alive and the standing of the person making the request.

How long it takes

What we can't delete

One thing only, and by legal obligation: accounting and tax records tied to subscriptions, which must be kept for ten years. Those are invoices, not recordings. They contain none of your voice and are used for nothing else.

If you disagree with our answer

You can complain to the supervisory authority of the country where you live: in Italy the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali (garanteprivacy.it), in the United Kingdom the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
